A little About Raku:
Some say it was developed by the Koreans for the Japanese tea ceremony several hundred years ago.
Raku is unique in that it is the only ceramic firing process, where the piece is taken out of the kiln while it is still glowing red-hot! The artist does this with long metal tongs, because the kiln can reach temperature up to 1800 degrees F. Then, depending upon the desired finish, the artist will hold the piece just inches from the face and blow gently on its surface. This results in the crackled, aged look that is typical of some Raku artwork. If colorful copper finishes are desired the piece is placed into a can filled with paper, where it bursts into flames and then is quickly smotherd by placing a tight lid on the can. The "reduction" process within the can produces spectacular colors that are truly unique.
Each of Jack Kromer's pieces are individually hand sculpted. No two are ever the same. Even the stamps used to add texture are sculpted ... sometimes carved on the end of a chopstick!
He develops his designs with the raku process in mind, striving to achieve a balance between the sculpture and the Raku finish.
